Supporting someone with an ED (eating disorder)

What NOT to say to someone in ED recovery:

even if it’s coming from a ‘caring’ place

1️⃣ “You look so much better now” (problematic both if the person has gained weight or if they have lost it).

2️⃣ “I’ve made your favourite food so you can eat that” - this can be triggering and feel controlling.

3️⃣ “I saw you ate your whole plate today, well done!”

4️⃣ “Aren’t you hungry?”

Things that might be helpful (depending on circumstance):

1️⃣ “How is your recovery going?” (LISTEN, don’t try to fix)

2️⃣ Asking if there are things that might be helpful/unhelpful. Some of my clients write lists to loved ones who are wanting to know how they can help.

3️⃣ “I care about you and am here for you.

4️⃣ Offering distraction around meals (from good conversation to watching TV together).

Be patient.
