Getting things wrong

My first experience of therapy was a disaster. I was 18, sitting across from a therapist who told me something I wasn’t ready to hear. I cried and swore I’d never go back.
But I did. I found a different therapist who didn’t just help me personally, but set me on the path to becoming a psychotherapist myself.
Being a client teaches you things you don’t learn in training. What it feels like when your therapist seems distracted, when they disclose too much, when they run late and when they get it wrong.
And honestly? They will get it wrong sometimes. Just like we all do in relationships. Therapy isn’t about perfection, it’s about repair, noticing what happens when expectations aren’t met, how we respond and what that brings up for us.
Sometimes, the most important work happens in those moments.
